Apple's fall lineup pairs a 2nm chip with the Siri overhaul it's been promising for two years

Apple's fall 2026 hardware push centers on the A20 Pro, the first Apple silicon chip built on a 2-nanometer process, paired with Apple's custom C2 modem in the iPhone 18 Pro line. Smaller process nodes are the kind of upgrade that rarely makes for exciting marketing copy, but the practical effect — meaningfully better performance per watt — is what makes on-device AI features viable at phone-battery power budgets in the first place.

Siri actually gets the upgrade it was promised

The more consequential change for most users is software: iOS 27 ships the Siri overhaul Apple originally previewed at WWDC and then delayed. The new "Siri AI" can see what's on the user's screen, draw on personal context across apps, and take actions on the user's behalf rather than just answering questions. Notably, the underlying models come from Google's Gemini — a pragmatic admission from Apple that building a competitive assistant model in-house on its original timeline wasn't happening, and that licensing a frontier model was the faster path to shipping.

Why the delay-then-license path matters

Apple spent roughly two years telling users that a dramatically more capable Siri was coming, missed its own original ship date, and ultimately reached outside the company for the model doing the heavy lifting. That's a meaningful shift for a company that has historically vertically integrated as much as possible. It also sets a precedent: if Apple, with its resources, concluded that licensing a frontier LLM was more viable than building one in-house on a competitive timeline, that's a real data point for the difficulty of the frontier-model race for anyone not already at the very top of it.

What ships when

Siri AI is rolling out as a public beta later this year rather than at general availability alongside the new hardware, so the chip and the assistant upgrade — despite launching in the same cycle — won't actually land in users' hands on the same day. Worth keeping in mind if you're evaluating the fall lineup as a single "AI iPhone" story rather than two separate rollouts on two different timelines.
